RoadTrip to Pondicherry: Day 1:
I was riding on way to Electronics City on my Uni, a regular day for office..?? I knew the day was something special, I felt something amazing from inside, saw in the mirror, Guru was riding along with Naveen as his pillion and I figured out Abhay was my pillion.
Then I realized, we were on a “ROADTRIP to Pondicherry…”
Number of resources: 4
Name of the Resources: Abhay, Guru, Mohsin and Naveen
Devices: Unicorn, Shine both HONDA rides.
Project Duration: 3 days
We were planning for a RoadTrip since long time, but due to some or the other reasons it din’t happened. But finally got time as we got a weekend and a holiday for Karnataka Rajotsova and hence we zeroed our destination to Pondicherry. As from many years I was hearing bout Pondicherry from a good friend of mine.
So it was Pondicherry. Finally Abhay, Guru and Naveen agreed for the roadtrip, we planned to meet up at my room as it is nearer to Electronics City at 7 am and leave early. Guess what, by the time we left our room it was around 11.45 am and by the time we hit the HOSUR road it was 12 pm.
We were on ROAD, with loaded petrol tanks but what bout loading our tummies..?? We did a decent a 50 KM in a hour and made to a hotel for breakfast. Actually it was a brunch not a breakfast, nor a lunch. We ate whatever was available, pongal, dosa and off course awesome TEA. Came out and saw clouds were waiting for us, but we were determined to reach PONDI any cost. We dint even rode for few mins it started to rain heavily, what else do you think during rain ? We pulled over to a nearest place and started our cloud computing/smoke break.
Rain stopped, we decided to cover as much distance possible till it rains for the next time. We started the engines, yes the rain started again and again God Damn Cloud Computing. Finally after couple of minutes it stopped, we felt it rained for hours . This time we can see sun grinning for us.
And then we were on road again. It was amazing to ride after rain, I was in pillion and when were at a toll naka I saw a mighty truck coming on us from the right side. Man, it was terrific, I could literally would have touched its front left tyre when waved my hand. I showed signal to slow down for the truck, thank god the trucker gracefully slowed down. Looked back, saw Guru was terrified for the trucker move, both smiled and then we went ahead.
It was NH7, the Golden Quadrilateral, amazing road. We rode in style by following our own various road signals, like while changing line use our indicators, while overtaking making other guy to slow down till we pass. Glad, we followed some rules and were happy as we felt to have some road sense. (More on it later, sure will write something over Public riding skills which ends with “Chalta hai”).
We were near Krishnagiri, spotted dark clouds ahead, real dark clouds. Before we could think something we were in between the Clouds and it started to rain. As in F1, when it rains they pit stop for tyre change, we stopped for a shelter. So we pulled up to a nearest available shelter. Guess where we ended up, guess guess. We showed up in a local bar, full of tamil speaking people. The shop guy was kind enough to let us inside, it was raining outside like its gonna be the end of the world. For us, we got some time to catch up with our lives, Cloud Computing started, so the facts on Rajni Saar as we were in his area. Wow, bows to our Rajni Saar.
It rained for one and half hours and it stopped. We packed up, were on road in few secs. We happily took a right for Pondi after seeing a board. Rode a few mins but couldn’t find a Pondi milestone, got confused and asked a guy on a bike for the way. That guy signalled us saying we took a wrong turn and told us to go back, we went back without thinking. Again we hit the NH7 and saw the board again which was pointing right for Pondi. To all this confusion Abhay said “Rajni Saar ko phone laga re, kya kirikiri road ke baare mein”. Actually we had taken the correct right turn, dont know why that guy told to go back.
Anyways, we were cool and went ahead with the NH 66 and started to face another problem. Bad roads, kinda full of potholes. With no other way, we rode across the potholes with a slower pace. We got a glimpse of mighty Eastern Ghats, had read bout those in History classes, now they were in front of me “Standing Tall”. We had pit stops whenever we felt tiredness, more importantly it was an excuse to stop riding due to pain in the butt.
As we were in Tamil Nadu, it was rare to spot Karnataka buses. Whenever we spotted a Karnataka bus we were like Namma Bus, Namma bus… We dint knew what was ahead for us, we saw two overturned buses. A Karnataka and a local bus collided head to head, well it was horrible to see, passing through we went ahead with our ROADTRIP as it was getting darker by every second. Dark..?? Night riding..?? God…
It was around 6 pm, when we reached Thiruvannaamalai, which is famous for its temples and we did 210 kms till then. As we din’t had proper lunch, also were tired looked around and found a Auro Hotel. It was amazing with its interior and service. Guess what, we loved the place so much we ended up spending more than a hour. I loved french fries and Masala tea.
After a small Cloud Computing stint we started our ROADTRIP as it was already dark, I and Guru took the bikes as we knew the bikes and had done couple of rides in night (don’t forget daily night rides in Bengaluru.). It took another half an hour to come out of Thiruvannaamalai, due to bad roads, also it had rained. We got out and were back on NH 66, it was pitch black. Heart pumping fast for the night ride as riding at night is hectic than day ride. The problems list was, no one in our group knew the road, only Tamil milestones, deserted road, even Cops. Well, when you got your best buddies around who cares, we went with our night riding.
We were cruising around at our best, whenever possible we hit max speed. But were alert on night driving, as earlier said we had our own road signals. For night driving, whenever we used to overtake someone, continously we used to change our beam, also I felt me and Guru had telepathic skills on when to take overtake, how much speed need to ride and whenever we did some mistake, both were like “Come on dude, not a problem. Lets do it”.
Well we were still zooming around the deserted road, a bus was on way to pondi, it was riding very slow and road was a narrow one. Guru was ahead of me, he overtook the bus easily, I went to take behind him but saw in mirror a car coming so I couldn’t overtake, I was following the bus and a car both at slow speed, I tried overtaking the car but in mirror saw another car, it overtook me, now I was following bus and two cars. I couldn’t overtake anyone for over 20 mins, but were cruising around with decent speed.
I knew Guru went ahead, was worried whether he will stop for us. I was curious whether I will get a chance to overtake these three vehicles, yes I got a chance and in a shot I overtook, 1, 2 and 3 vehicles in a shot. Heartbeat wasn’t normal, but got smile on face as with the amount of confidence I overtook. Abhay was my pillion, even he was nervous, but did it. And I reunited with Guru, here we go again for a decent ride again.
Took a pit stop for tea at a normal shop, guess what. Abhay praised my and Guru’s night riding skills in his style (Thanks Abhay, that meant a ton to us). Figured out we were still 30 kms from Pondi, after the break again me and Guru started the trip. We managed to log few kms in a narrow road with low speed, suddenly it got converted to a four lane expressway when we were near Pondi.
Wicked smile, we were on full throttle. Wow, the road was well lit with the reflectors and markings. Couldn’t had asked for more, we touched a ton (sure, someone gonna blast me after reading hitting a ton at night). Whenever turns were there, we blindly followed the reflectors. Within no time the road led us to Pondicherry gate, YES we reached Pondicherry finally around 10 PM. A small pit stop for phone calls, this time Guru was grinning for the awesome ride, we hi fived to each other. Trust me, we are gonna make the Kanyakumari and Ladakh asap…
Guess what, as we entered Pondi we saw fireworks in sky. Yes, fireworks for our welcome. Whatever, it was nice, we explored around, we hit the beach first. 🙂 Ya, we reached the Pondicherry Boulevard, now first thing first. We needed a lodge, so asked a person who politely explained various places to go for and he also mentioned everything gets close at 11. We hurried, atlast finally at Anna Salai street we got a decent room at a lodge, went out, got the parcel for everything.
And we started our party by raising a toast for ourselves on reaching safely and making the trip in style. \m/ guys…
